The app is the least important part. The mechanical fit decides whether you like it.
A smart lock is still a lock
Underneath the app, the codes and the notifications, a smart lock is a deadbolt. Everything that makes an ordinary deadbolt work well still decides whether this one does.
The bore has to be the right size. The backset has to match. The strike has to line up so the bolt enters cleanly. The bolt has to throw its full travel without being forced, every time, on a door that has been open in the sun and shut in the rain.
Get those right and almost any decent smart lock behaves. Get them wrong and the most expensive model on the shelf will disappoint you, because the electronics are being asked to overcome a mechanical problem they were never designed to overcome.
This is why two people can buy the same lock and have completely different opinions of it. They are not really reviewing the lock. They are reviewing their doors.
Check the door before you check the reviews
Before reading a single review, go and test the door you intend to put it on.
Open the door. Throw the deadbolt with the door standing open, using the thumbturn. It should move smoothly through its whole travel with light pressure.
Now close the door and do it again. If you have to lean on the door, lift it, or push it while you turn, stop - you have found the problem, and it is not a problem a smart lock will solve.
A motor has far less force available than your wrist does. Every bit of resistance you are unconsciously overcoming is resistance the motor will meet on its own, in the cold, on a battery that is halfway through its life. It will fail to throw, report the door as locked when the bolt is short, or grind itself out early.
Fix the alignment first. Then buy the lock.
Keyed override matters more than people think
Batteries do not die at convenient moments, and this is the feature that decides how you feel about the lock on the day it happens.
Some models keep a physical key cylinder as a backup. Some keep external contacts so a battery can be held against the outside of the lock to power it long enough to open. Some have neither, and rely on you noticing the warnings.
Any of the three can be fine. What is not fine is finding out which one you own while standing outside in the rain.
If your lock has a key override, the key needs to live somewhere that is not inside the house. That sounds obvious and it is the single most common way this backup turns out to be useless.
If it has no override at all, that is a genuine decision rather than a detail - especially on the only door into the property.
Batteries, cold and the real-world lifespan
Three things drain a smart lock, and only one of them is obvious.
Motor cycles are the obvious one. A door used constantly consumes more than a door used twice a day.
Wireless radios are the quiet one. A lock that maintains a constant connection uses considerably more power than one that wakes only when something happens.
Cold is the one nobody expects. Battery chemistry delivers less current as the temperature drops, and an exterior lock in a Pennsylvania or Delaware winter is sitting in it all day. A lock that has been faultless since spring can start struggling on the first genuinely cold night, on batteries that would have been fine indoors.
The practical answer: change them on a schedule rather than on a warning, and change them before winter rather than during it. Whatever the manufacturer estimates, assume the real figure is shorter on an exterior door here.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and hubs, in plain English
The connection type is presented as a feature list. In practice it is a choice about power and reach.
Bluetooth works at the door. Your phone talks to the lock when you are near it. It uses very little power and it does not let you do anything from elsewhere.
Wi-Fi lets you check and control the lock from anywhere, which is genuinely useful - confirming the door is locked from a parking lot has value. It also uses substantially more power, which shows up as shorter battery life.
A hub-based system puts a small bridge somewhere in the house. The lock talks to the bridge over something low-power, and the bridge handles the internet side. You get remote access without the lock carrying the radio burden.
If remote access matters to you, the hub arrangement is usually the better engineering. If it does not, Bluetooth alone will make the lock last longer and cost less.
Codes are the real advantage over a key
This is where a smart lock genuinely beats a key, and it has nothing to do with the app being pleasant.
A code can be issued to one person and taken away from that person alone. The cleaner, the dog walker, the contractor, the family member staying for a week, the guest - each gets their own, and revoking one does not disturb anyone else. A physical key cannot do that. Taking a key back means asking, and trusting that no copy was made.
Good practice is simple and mostly ignored. Give everyone their own code rather than sharing one. Delete codes when the reason for them ends, on the day it ends. Do not use the year, the house number, or anything printed on the mailbox. And check the list occasionally - most households find codes on it that belong to situations that ended long ago.
What happens if the company disappears
It is fair to ask what happens if the company behind the lock stops supporting it, and it is worth answering without drama.
The mechanical part does not depend on anyone. The bolt keeps throwing. If the lock has a key override, the key keeps working.
The keypad usually keeps working too, because on most designs the codes live in the lock rather than on a server. That is the important detail, and it is worth checking before buying: a lock that verifies codes locally keeps working offline, and one that checks with a server does not.
What you lose is the remote side - the app, the notifications, the ability to add a code from your phone.
The practical conclusion is not to avoid smart locks. It is to prefer one that still functions as a competent standalone keypad deadbolt when the internet, the app, or the company is gone.
Renting, landlords and shared entrances
If you rent, get permission before fitting anything, in writing if your lease is at all formal. Most leases treat the locks as the landlord's, and the fact that you improved them is not always a defense.
Choose something reversible, keep the original hardware in a box, and refit it when you leave. That single habit turns a potential dispute into a non-event.
Be aware that a shared entrance is usually not yours to change at all, however reasonable the change would be.
If you are a landlord, the useful thing about these locks is turnover. A code changed between tenants replaces the ritual of collecting keys and wondering how many copies exist. Keep a key override and keep the key, decide in advance who holds the administrative access, and write down what happens at the end of a tenancy - because a smart lock with an unclear owner is worse than a mechanical one with a clear one.
