When you actually need this
Car key replacement is the answer when the key is gone rather than broken - you have lost it, or every copy has disappeared at once, and there is nothing left to work from.
It is not the answer when the key still exists in some form. If a blade has snapped and you still have both halves, that is extraction plus a fresh cut. If the key turns the lock but the engine will not catch, the metal is fine and the electronic half needs attention. If the buttons have stopped working but the car still starts, that is the remote rather than the key.
The distinction matters because a key that exists, even a damaged one, makes the job substantially smaller. When something can be read, the vehicle does not have to be interrogated from scratch.
The other situation that calls for replacement is a key that has become unreliable - worn so far that it needs jiggling, or bent at the shoulder. That key is going to snap, and it will do it at the least convenient moment. Replacing it deliberately is a great deal easier than replacing it from the side of a road.
How the work is done
The first step is identifying exactly what the vehicle expects. Year, make and model narrow it, but within a single model year there can be several key systems, so the vehicle itself is checked rather than assumed.
Next the pattern has to come from somewhere. With no key to copy, it is taken from the vehicle - from the code associated with it, or by reading one of its locks to work out the sequence inside. Either route produces the cut the manufacturer intended rather than a trace of something worn.
A blank of the correct type is then cut to that pattern. Type matters as much as pattern here: the right cut on the wrong blank will not enter the lock at all.
If the vehicle has an immobilizer, the mechanical key is only half the job. The chip has to be introduced to the car so the engine will run, which is done with equipment that communicates with the vehicle directly.
Finally everything is tested - doors, trunk, ignition or start button, and the remote functions if the key carries them. A key that starts the car but will not open the trunk is not finished.
What it takes to do it properly
Three things, and the middle one is where most of the difference lies.
Equipment: a cutting machine capable of the blank in question, and programming equipment with current coverage for the make. Vehicle security moves, and coverage that was complete three years ago is not complete now.
Information: the vehicle's identity, and proof it belongs to the person asking. This is not paperwork for its own sake. Making a working key to a car is precisely the capability that must not be handed to the wrong person, so registration, title or insurance in the customer's name alongside photo ID is asked for every single time.
Judgement: knowing when the straightforward route will not work. Some vehicles need all existing keys present, because programming rewrites the whole list and any key left in a drawer stops working. Some need the vehicle's power state managed carefully. Some are genuinely dealer-only, and saying so on the phone is more use than discovering it in a parking lot.
A proper result is a key indistinguishable from the factory one. A bodged one is a key that works today and needs a knack by winter.
Getting it right the first time
The commonest way this goes wrong is a key cut from the wrong information. Tracing a worn key rather than cutting to code produces a blade that inherits every bit of wear the old one had picked up - it works at first and gets worse, and the customer concludes that aftermarket keys are poor when the method was the problem.
The second is stopping at the metal. A cut blade that has not been coded to the immobilizer will turn the ignition and leave the engine dead. That is not a faulty key; it is half a job.
The third is forgetting the other keys. If a key has been lost rather than broken, somebody may be holding it. The vehicle should be told to forget the missing ones so they stop working - but this has to be decided deliberately, because on many vehicles it also cancels the spare sitting at home. Having every key present at the visit avoids that entirely.
The fourth is testing only the new key. The visit is the natural moment to check every key and fob the owner has, which is how people discover that a spare quietly stopped working years ago.
What to have ready
Four things, and none of them take long to gather.
The vehicle's year, make and model. If you are unsure, the registration document or the insurance card will say.
Proof the vehicle is yours - registration, title or insurance in your name - together with photo ID. We ask everybody, and it is worth knowing before we arrive rather than being surprised by it.
Every key and fob you still have, even ones you believe are dead. If any of them are present at the visit they can usually be preserved rather than cancelled, and a fob that has stopped working is often just a battery.
And the location. Where the vehicle is standing shapes the visit more than people expect: a time-limited bay, a lot that closes in the evening, a permit street, or a parking structure with a height barrier that a service van may not clear.
On the day the work happens at the car. Nothing is towed, nothing is left overnight for the large majority of vehicles, and before we leave every key you own is tested against the vehicle rather than just the new one.
